This sugya addresses the concept of Nichsei Tzibbur - i.e. possessions that belong to the entire community. What are the Halachic distinctions between a community possession (i.e. Shul, Sefer Torah, Mikveh, Korban Tzibbur, etc.) and a typical partnership? Does each community member own a share of the community possession, as is the case with a regular partnership? Is one then permitted to forfeit or sell his share of the community possession, as one would do when exiting or dissolving a partnership? This sugya has ramifications in the forming of partnerships, corporations, and LLCs today, pertaining to topics such as Ribbis, Chametz, etc.
This sugya ties into Parshas Korach, where Moshe asked Hashem to exclude the portion of Adas Korach from the daily Korban Tamid, as explained by Rashi.
