This deluxe Berkowitz Family Edition consists of sugyos related to Purim.

1- Mitzvas Zechiras Ma'aseh Amalek

Analyzes the Mitzvah of remembering Amalek, and discuses the essence of the Mitzvah and the various Halachos, such as the requirement to read from a sefer Torah, with a minyan, and whether women are also obligated.

2- Mikrah Megilah B'layl Purim

Analyzes the obligation of reading the Megillah on Purim day, and also the night before. Specifically, it discusses the source of the nighttime megillah obligation - whether it is part of the original Takana of the Nevi'im (to read the megilla by day), or if it is a new Takana from Chazal. We will discuss the reason why the nighttime reading was added. We also study how this affects other aspects of Purim, such as the Bracha of Shehecheyanu during the day, and how this may also affect the Halachos of Mishteh and Simcha by night.

3- Chiyuv Nashim B'Mikrah Megilah.

Although women are normally exempt from Mitzvos that are time-sensitive, they are nevertheless obligated in Krias Hamegillah.  On the surface, it would seem that the obligation of women is identical to that of men; however, there are some Rishonim who hold that it is not.  While the obligation for men is to read the Megillah (and the Ba'al Koreh is motzee the tzibur), it may be that women are only obligated to hear the Megillah being read.
This has direct practical implications - for example:
  • Can a woman be motzee a man if her chiyuv is different from his?
  • When a woman reads the Megillah or if a man is reading for women only, do they change the nusach of the Bracha to say "Lishmoah Megilah" instead of "Al Mikroh Megillah"?
We discuss the various reasons amongst the Acharonim as to why a woman’s obligation may be different than that of a man.

4- Matanos L'Evyonim
This sugya analyzes the Mitzvah of Matanos L'evyonim. Is it simply a form of Tzedakah that Chazal obligated us to fulfill on Purim? Or, is it its own Mitzvah specific to Purim (similar to Mishloach Manos and Megillah), independent of the general Mitzvah of Tzedaka? This distinction has direct ramifications with regards to whether Matanos L'Evyonim is subject to the specific parameters of Hilchos Tzedaka.

We address the meaning of "kol haposhet yad nosnim lo"- i.e not investigating each request for money - as well as many Halacha L'Maaseh scenarios.

5- Mishteh V'Simcha B'Purim

This sugya focuses on the least-discussed mitzvah of Purim - Mishteh V'Simcha.  We discuss if the obligation of Simcha requires one to wash for bread at a seudah, similar to the chiyuv on Shabbos and Yom Tov.  We also discuss the unique obligation to drink wine on Purim - is this part of the Purim Seudah, or is this a special independent obligation?  We discuss why there is mitzvah to get drunk and different opinions as to how one can fulfill this chiyuv.

Halachic ramifications include: eating Purim seudah on the first night, forgetting Al Hanisssim during Birchas Hamazon, getting married on Purim, the shiur of drinking, and more.
