This Sugya discusses the topic of patronizing Jewish-owned businesses, as well as hiring Jewish employees and contractors. This Halacha is not mentioned in the Rambam or Shulchan Aruch, but it is brought down as a Drasha in the Toras Kohanim. Assuming that is a real obligation and not just a recommended practice, the question arises if this obligation exists even when the Jew's price for the item is higher than that of other vendors.
Does this mitzvah apply when other conditions make it more difficult to purchase at the Jew's establishment, even if the price is comparable? Distance, lack of adequate parking, limited return policy – are these factors that exempt one from this mitzvah?
Also included in this booklet are two famous discussions by our Poskim:
- The Rema has a famous Teshuva where he was asked to intervene in a fascinating dispute between the Maharam Padwa (Rav Meir Katzenellenbogen of Padua - Italy) and a non-Jewish Italian printer (Marc Antonio Giustiniani).
- A controversy arose between Rav Elchonon Wasserman, his brother-in-law Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, and the Chazon Ish regarding the employment of Jews (even those who may not be Shomrei Shabbos) over the local Arabs.
