In this Sugya we study the essence of Pirsumei Nissa on Chanukah. We also discuss if Pirsum HaNes is an essential element in this mitzvah (and the absence of Pirsum invalidates the Mitzva) or if the Pirsum is simply an additional aspect that enhances the Mitzvah (but is not essential to the Kiyum of the actual mitzvah of Ner Chanukah).
We will study the various opinions of the Rishonim (as well as the Poskim) who debate this topic. Furthermore, we discuss how this debate can affect the Halachos of “Sof Z’man Hadlokas Neiros", specifically in Chutz Le'aretz where we don’t light outside - thus minimizing the Pirsum of the Ness in general. Additionally, we devote a special section to the discussion amongst contemporary Poskim explaining the prevalent minhag (in Chutz Le’aretz) to light inside our homes – contrary to the original Takanah of Chazal.
