This booklet explores the Halachos of reading the Megillah in public. The Pri Megadim (brought in Mishnah Berurah 690:26) advises that every "yerei shamayim" should read along quietly with the Ba'al Koreh as one must hear every single word to be yotzei, which is difficult when children are making noise.

The mitzvah of Megillah reading involves two aspects: Pirsumei Nisa (requiring a public reading l'chatchila) and B'rov Am Hadras Melech (honoring the mitzvah with a large gathering). This raises important questions:

  • When one reads quietly with the Chazzan, is this considered reading with a minyan for Pirsumei Nisa?
  • Does reading individually while in a tzibbur fulfill the klal of "B'rov Am Hadras Melech"?

In this booklet, we will discuss:

  • The various opinions regarding whether a minyan is required for Megillah reading
  • The din of "B'rov Am" for Megillaj .
  • Whether reading quietly with the Sha"tz constitutes reading "b'tzibbur" and "B'rov Am."
