This sugya discusses a Bracha that is unique to Ner Chanukah – the Bracha of She’asah Nissim, which is recited when one sees the Neiros of Chanukah (Birkas Haro’eh).  This special Bracha was instituted to be said when one merely sees the Neiros of Chanukah -even if he didn’t light them on his own.

Among the questions addressed:

  • ·         Why don’t we recite this Bracha when seeing other Mitzvos.
  • ·         When does one recite the Bracha?  What if one sees a lit Menorah before he lights his own?  What if one is traveling and will be unable to light his own Menorah?  What if his family is lighting at home for him while he is away?
  • ·         What is the essence of this Bracha?  Is seeing the Chanuka lights an actual part of the Mitzvah that warrants its own Bracha, or is it a form of Hoda’ah on the general miracle of Chanukah.
  • ·         Should one actually refrain from looking at other Chanukah lights before he lights his own?  For example, if one is on his way home to light, should he be careful to avoid seeing other lit Menorahs?
  • ·         Is there a special Mitzva to gaze at the Neiros?
