This Sugya focuses on defining Hiddur Mitzvah, literally translated to mean “beautifying a Mitzvah.” The term "Hiddur Mitzvah" is most frequently used to refer to beautifying the items with which the Mitzvah is performed; for example, purchasing a nice Tallis, using beautiful Daled Minim, honoring Shabbos and Yom Tov with elaborate Seudos, beautiful clothing, silver goblets, etc.
However, there is another element of Hiddur Mitzvah – beautifying and enhancing the manner in which it is performed. This is culled from the Gemara in Maseches Shabbos that describes how to perform a Bris Milah in the most Mehudar fashion. (The Mitzvah of Bris Milah is found in the Parshas – Lech Lecha.)
Some examples of this type of Hiddur:
- Limiting eating on Erev Pesach in order to have an appetite for the Mitzvah of Achilas Matzah.
- Tying the lulav together with the Aravos and Hadassim into a single bundle.
- · A more Mehudar Esrog (according to all Halachic opinions) vs a more aesthetically beautiful Esrog.
- · Beautifying a mitzvah when no one will actually see the beauty (for example, Mehudar Parshiyos of Tefillin).
- And much more
