The Torah commands us to dwell in the Sukkah for 7 days (Basukos Teyshvu Shivas Yamim). Chazal explain this to mean that one should live in his Sukkah in the same manner that he lives in his home all year (Teishvu Ke’eyn Taduru). Not only should a person eat all his meals in the Sukkah, but he should sleep, relax, and entertain company in the Sukkah as well.
Although the Mitzvah of Sukkah is not limited to eating, it is central to the mitzvah. As such, there are very specific Halachos regarding what one must eat in the Sukkah, and what is permissible to eat outside of the Sukkah. For example:
- Mezonos (with/without kevias seudah)
- Beverages – is there a difference between wine and other drinks?
- Different food groups - Meat, fish, fruits/vegetables
- Shabbos/Yomtov Seudos vs Chol Hamoed
We discuss the various approaches amongst the Rishonim as to why one who is snacking is exempt from the Sukkah and the various halachic differences that pertain to each one. We also discuss the Bracha of “Harei zeh meshubach” (he is praiseworthy) that Chazal bestows upon one who is stringent in eating and drinking everything in the Sukkah.
