This sugya is a sequel to the previous sugya of Issur Bracha She’aina  Tzricha.  While the previous sugya focused on defining the source of this issur, this sugya will focus specifically on how and when this issur is applicable. Is this prohibition only applicable when Hashem’s name is recited in vain in the context of a Bracha, or any time Hashem’s name is mentioned unnecessarily (i.e. during tefilla, piyyutim, zemiros etc.)?

For example – different practices apply when one forgets "Ya'aleh V’yavo" duing Bentching (Birkas Hamazon) and when one forgets "Al Hanissim".  Yaale V’yavo contains Hashem’s name, while Al Hanissim does not.  (One may recite Al Hanissim during Horachamon if he forgot to say it at the proper time, but that does not apply to Yaale V’yavo.)

We included a special section with various methods to help one avoid transgressing this issur. We also discuss various possible solutions to make a bracha if one is mesupak.  Some examples:

• Saying alternate names of Hashem.
• Saying Hashem’s name in a foreign language.
• Thinking the name but not verbalizing it.  
• Can a parent/teacher teach children to make a Bracha using Hashem’s name?
