This choveres discusses the prohibition of following Chukos Hagoyim, as stated in Parashas Acharei Mos: "Uvechukoseihem Lo Seilechu”. We discuss the various opinions if Chukos Hagoyim includes all manner of non-Jewish conduct, or just those specific to ovdei Avodah Zarah.
According to one opinion, this prohibition includes all types of conduct that were initiated by non-Jews. Others say that it includes only behaviors that have no logical basis or obvious benefit — and when a Jew performs them, he is acting solely to imitate the behavior of the Goy.
The practical Halachic implications are vast - including wearing distinct clothing, shaving one's beard, Thanksgiving celebrations, placing trees in shuls on Shavuos, and countless more.
