Krias Hatorah is an integral part of davening. It is
arranged so that we complete reading the entire Torah once a year. There are
sources for customs that complete the Torah over several years; however, the
prevalent minhag today is to finish the Torah every year on Simchas Torah and
then begin again on the Shabbos after Sukkos. Our Chachamim split the Torah
into 54 Parshiyos to fit into this schedule.
- When was the takana of Krias Hatorah instituted, and by
whom?
- What was the purpose of this takana - was it to get to
know the Mitzvos and understand them better, or to make sure that one learns
Torah consistently, as he is required?
- Does one have to hear the entire Parsha? What if one
missed one passuk? What about one letter?
- Are there halachic differences between the weekday kriah
and the Shabbos kriah?
- What if one missed Krias Hatorah on Shabbos - can he make
it up the following week, or by that day's Mincha?
- What if one missed Krias Hatorah during the week - can he
lein by that day's Mincha?
- When one reads the Torah to make up for a missed kriah, does he need 10 people who haven't heard the leining to join?
This year, the second day of Shavuos (in Chutz La'aretz)
falls on Shabbos (June 12). In Eretz Yisroel, that day is not Yomtov, and they
will read the regular Shabbos kriah (Parshas Naso), while those in Chutz
La'aretz will read the kriah of Yomtov and will read Parshas Naso the following
week. This puts Chutz La'aretz one parsha behind Eretz Yisroel. This affects
those who travel between Eretz Yisroel and Chutz La'aretz over this time
period. What are the implications, and what is the common practice to resolve
this issue?
