This Sugya discusses whether there a minimum time limit with regard to the prohibition of Yichud. Is it forbidden to be in Yichud for even for a mere moment, or does the prohibition of Yichud only apply if they will remain together for a certain amount of time? The Gemara in Maseches Sotah delineates various opinions regarding amounts of time of seclusion that would cause a woman to be considered a Sotah, and the Poskim debate as to whether these shiurim apply to Yichud as well. We discuss the various reasons as to why these two different situations (Yichud and Sotah) can be compared with regards to the amount of time of seclusion, and thus the debate among the Poskim regarding Halacha l’Maaseh. One common scenario discussed is Yichud in an elevator – the amount of time between stops at each floor, elevators that don’t stop at every floor (as in some high-rise buildings), the fact that anyone can enter at any time, etc.
