This sugya discusses the obligation to inspect one’s Mezuzahs regularly.  While it is incumbent upon every Jew to place a Mezuzah on his doorpost, Chazal instituted that one must also periodically inspect his Mezuzahs to make sure that they are still kosher.  The Rishonim and Poskim discuss whether or not one can rely on a Chazaka that his kosher Mezuzah remains kosher even after a period of time.  They discuss the possible factors that may impact the kosher status of a Mezuzah, which is why it would need to be checked regularly.

In this sugya, we discuss the reasons for this Takana, and the different schedules recommended by Chazal.

Among the questions discussed:

• ·         Is the reason for checking because we are concerned that the ink or parchment degraded over time, or is it to make sure the actual parchment wasn’t removed/stolen?
• ·         If the Mezuzah was checked at the time of purchase, does he need to bring it to a Sofer when it is time to inspect it, or can he check by himself just to make sure all the letters are still intact?
• ·         What if the Mezuzah is in a weatherproof case?
• ·         When one removes his Mezuzahs to inspect them, should he put up replacement Mezuzahs in the interim?
• ·         Many have the custom to check mezuzah annually in the month of Elul (more frequently than required).  Why is it permitted to live in a home without a Mezuzah just because of an extra stringency?
• ·         Do the same guidelines apply to checking Tefillin, or are they different since they are sealed and not exposed to the elements?
