In the previous sugya, we discussed the various opinions amongst the Rishonim regarding the requirement to sanctify the Shabbos using wine.  Clearly, the bracha of Borei Pri Hagafen over kiddush is more than just the regular Birkas Hanehenin.  This sugya discusses exactly that.

Many occasions require a Bracha over a cup of wine (Kos Shel Bracha) – for example:  marriage, Sheva brachos, Bris Milah, Pidyon Haben, etc.  Chazal dictate that the Kos Shel Bracha must be drunk, even though it is not made in the context of Birkas Hanhenin.  This sugya discusses the general application of this principle for all Kosos Shel Bracha, and specifically focuses on this chiyuv as it pertains to Kiddush on Friday night.  We delve into the various interpretations of why one must drink this wine, and how these interpretations affect the halacha l’maaseh.

Some of the questions discussed:

  • ·         Why is it customary to have all the participants taste from the wine?
  • ·         If the one who recites the Kiddush does not drink the wine, is he yotzeh his obligation of Kiddush?
  • ·         What if the wine spilled before someone had a chance to drink it?
  • ·         Does the klal of “Shomeah Ke’onah” apply here – if one heard Kiddush, is it considered as if he also drank from the wine?
  • ·         Is the Bracha of Shehechayanu recited on Yom Kippur night (after Kol Nidrei) considered part of Kiddush, even though there is no kos?
  • ·         What do we do at a Bris on Yom Kippur or Tisha B’av, when an adult can’t drink from the Kos Shel Bracha?
  • ·         Who drinks the wine at the Bris?
  • ·         Why doesn’t the Mesader Kiddushin drink the wine under the Chupah?
  •

Please note:  this sugya discusses only the issue of drinking wine at the Friday night kiddush.  Kiddush during the day has a different set of rules, and will be addressed in the upcoming sugya, where we define the general idea of making kiddush a second time, after we were already mekadesh Shabbos at its onset.
