This year's Shavous sugya discusses the concept of Kavana during the performance of Mitzvos. As we celebrate the Kabala of Torah and Mitzvos, it behooves one to focus on the most optimal way to perform these mitzvos. We discuss the machlokes amongst the Tana'im and the Amora'im as to whether or not the lack of kavana negates the action - or if the act of performing the mitzvah is all that is needed.

Among the wide range of topics discussed:

  • When one performs a mitzvah, must he have in mind to fulfill it, or is the action itself enough, even if he has no thought to fulfill it (i.e. in sleep mode)?
  • Do we assume that even if one is not consciously thinking to perform the mitzvah, the fact that he is doing the action implies at least some intent?
  • Is it a preferred practice to verbalize one's intent to perform a mitzvah beforehand (i.e. reciting L'shem Yichud, Hineni Muchan, etc)?
  • What if one does intend to perform an action, but has a completely different intent (other than the performance of the mitzvah) - i.e. a personal reason, for one's enjoyment, etc.
  • Does Limud HaTorah also require special kavana to fulfill this specific mitzvah?
  • What if one is reciting words of Torah for reasons other than the mitzvah of Limud HaTorah (i.e. reciting Tehillim, saying Selichos, listening to the Megillah)?
  • And much more
